Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what you were actually seeing? Here’s something incredible: Some of the stars you see at night may not even exist anymore. That’s because light takes time to travel. The Sun, for example, is about 8 light-minutes away, which means we see it as it was about 8 minutes ago. Now imagine a star 1,000 light-years away. The light we see tonight left that star 1,000 years ago. So we’re actually seeing what it looked like 1,000 years in the past.
